Who's Doug

I was born and raised in Findlay, Ohio, which is 45 miles south of Toledo. I am the child of a single mother. My father was killed in the Vietnam conflict shortly after I was born.

Being a "latch key kid" before the term was popularized, was both interesting and a challenge. It also shaped my character in a way that helps me even today.

I moved to Columbus, Ohio, in 1986 to attend Ohio State. Although I haven't finished my studies (and probably won't), I decided to stay in Columbus. I am currently working as a customer service rep for a healthcare concern.

I officially became a Humanist in 1994, but I have had a Humanist philosophy since High School. I hope if you read my Humanism page you will see why I feel that the Humanist Philosophy is the best way for humans to live.

Politically I am an Independent. I vote for the person who I think will do the best job. Philosophically I tend to lean liberal on social issues and conservative on money issues. I am not much into political parties and I refuse to declare a party to vote in primaries so I only vote on issues during those elections.

That is not to say I don't have a preference in parties. I do not like the Republicans. They have been so infected with Religious Right fanatics since the 1980's that I can't fathom ever voting for a Republican candidate now or in the near future. Their current leadership on the national and state level mock the basic foundations our Republic was founded on, so I work and vote against them when I can.

That doesn't mean I only support the Democrats. Since the middle of President Clinton's second term, the Democrats seemed to fall apart. They lack the backbone to stand up to the overt conservatism in the Congress and local districts.

Because of the un-Democratic "two party" system, third parties have little influence. I would much prefer that the US move to a preference voting method where we would have a large list of candidates to choose from. Only then will we have the kind of Democracy our country was founded on. The two major parties have made it almost impossible for a 3rd party (or more) to even get into the door.

I hate (yes, hate) stupidity and stupid people. I dislike whining and people who try to manipulate other people.

I admire people who are successful through their own hard work and sweat and not on the backs of other people. I admire people, who even in a crisis, are honest and forthcoming and who admit their failings and mistakes.

I am also a self confessed computer geek. Some people are shade tree mechanics, well I'm a shade tree computer geek.

Updated info on my life can be found on my blog Doug's Views.
